The department looks after people with HIV infection in the Borders. HIV clinics are held on the first Tuesday of every month by appointment.

Our HIV team includes doctors, nurses, and health advisers. We are part of a managed clinical network, linked with the HIV units in Edinburgh. This means that we have access to tests, support and experimental treatments available in a large HIV care centre.

If you have moved, or are moving to Borders and wish to transfer your HIV care:

  • Phone and book an appointment in the HIV clinic (01896 663700). Tell the receptionist that you need an appointment in the HIV clinic.
  • If you are already attending another clinic, ask your clinic doctor to write a transfer letter for you.

People with HIV who are unwell may be seen as an emergency at the Sexual Health Clinic.  If you have a problem, phone and ask to speak to the clinic nurse or health adviser who will arrange for you to be seen quickly if necessary.  Occasionally we admit patients who are ill to hospital.  Usually we care for people with HIV in the medical wards at the Borders General Hospital.  If necessary, we can admit patients for specialist care the Regional Infectious Diseases Unit (RIDU), at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.

For more information on all aspects of HIV see the HIV section.
