All our services are confidential, refer to the documents below for more information.

The GUM clinic is both Confidential and Anonymous. This means that we do not use your name outside the clinic:

  • We ask you to fill in a form with personal information including you name, date-of-birth and address.
  • We then give you a unique identification number – your clinic PIN.  This number is used on all samples that leave the clinic.
  • Your personal details are recorded in our notes and on a computer system.
  • Only Sexual Health staff can access these notes and computer record.  It is not open to your GP practice, the BGH or anyone else.
  • Any tests or samples we take are identified by number and date of birth only.  Nobody in the laboratories knows that the tests have been done on you.
  • We DO use your name when you are at the clinic – for example when we call you from the waiting room.

When you fill in the registration form, we ask you whether you want us to write to your GP

  • If you say yes, we will do so and your visit to the clinic will be recorded in your GP case notes. We will send you a copy of any letter if you want.
  • If you say no, we will not tell anyone about your visit. Details will not be available to your GP, hospitals or anyone else other than Borders Sexual Health GUM Clinic.
  • If you have any other questions about confidentiality, anonymity or contact with your GP, please ask the staff at our clinic.
